Three or more local 501(c)3 nonprofits will be selected to receive grants of up to $50,000 during an application process that began April 7. An application form and eligibility requirements are posted online at www.UnitedWayEscambia.org, under the Chip in $10 link on the home page. The deadline for nonprofit applications is 2 p.m. on April 21. The awards will be announced on April 28.
A second round of grants will be announced in May after the conclusion of the Chip in $10 Challenge.
During both application cycles, grants will be awarded for the following purposes:
- Emergency Crisis Assistance (75% of funding to be awarded; to be used within three months of receiving the grant; services eligible under other programs will not be funded). For individuals and families who have lost or are at risk of losing their residence, health care coverage, transportation, utilities, or other basic needs. Eligible grant uses are: car repair or transportation costs, health care coverage, mortgage costs, motel and hotel vouchers up to three days, rental assistance, security and utility deposits, utility payments, work and education related materials.
- Long-term Financial Stability and System Change (25% of funding to be awarded; to be used within nine months of receiving grant): Provide assistance to nonprofit agencies that assist individuals and families in measuring increased knowledge, skills and tools that contribute to long-term financial stability including, but not limited to: financial/credit counseling, basic money management education, and approved external quality control follow-up and documentation.
Individuals eligible for assistance will be Escambia County residents whose financial situation has significantly deteriorated since December, 2007, as a result of the recession, and who have a reasonable expectation of being able to sustain themselves after receiving assistance. Prospective recipients are required to complete six (6) hours of basic financial literacy training and provide proof of attendance before assistance is received.
